This study examines the capacity of the LSF system for the rapid reconstruction of damaged areas, in terms of speed of construction, lower structural weight, seismic performance, quality control and lower construction costs.

The results show that LSF, as one of the effective routes to industrialised building, can play an important part in shortening the time it takes affected communities to return to normal life.

Notably, many of the challenges of rebuilding after earthquakes and floods — the need for speed, safe housing, limited resources and tight time management — are also present when rebuilding areas damaged by war. The findings of this study can therefore also be used and developed in planning and carrying out post-war reconstruction.

Abstract

Given Iran's high seismicity and its frequent earthquakes and floods, the need for new, fast and safe methods of rebuilding damaged areas is felt more than ever. This study examines the advantages and capacities of light steel frame (LSF) structures for rapid reconstruction after natural disasters. Its aim is to assess the economic, practical and technical aspects of the LSF system compared with the construction methods common in Iran, such as tie-beam masonry and concrete frames. The research is analytical and comparative, based on domestic and international documents, field reports and successful experience worldwide. The results show that, thanks to its low weight, fast construction (up to 50% less build time), excellent seismic resistance and recyclability, LSF is an optimal choice for both temporary and permanent housing. By lowering construction and maintenance costs, improving the quality and safety of structures and fitting the principles of sustainability, the system plays a key role in crisis management. LSF is especially recommended for remote and rural areas, as it is easy to transport and needs few specialist workers. Combining LSF with new technologies such as BIM further improves the efficiency of reconstruction.
